Ahead of the Who‘s upcoming farewell tour, Pete Townshend announced on Sunday (May 18) that the band has definitively parted ways from drummer Zak Starkey, following a month of uncertainty since his initial firing and subsequent rehiring. “After many years of great work on drums from Zak the time has come for a change,” the guitar legend wrote. “A poignant time. Zak has lots of new projects in hand and I wish him the best.” Starkey issued his own statement regarding his dismissal from the band, writing: “I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endevours this would be a lie. I love the who and would never had quit.” This band upheaval comes only one week after the Who announced the dates and details of The Song Is Over North American Farewell Tour. Townshend added that the band have already selected Starkey’s replacement, revealing that “Scott Devours who has worked with Roger [Daltrey’s] solo band will join The Who for our Final shows. Please welcome him.” (Rolling Stone)
